Trash Humpers Harmony Korine, USA/United Kingdom
World Premiere

Harmony Korine returns to Gummo territory in this handheld video of a loser-gang cult-freak collective who do antisocial things in a nonnarrative way, except for the song-and-dance numbers.

When I talked to harmony at his art exhibit opening in nashville he told me he had two things in the work. First, he was getting ready to shoot something very quickly and very small. He said that it was going to make more people angry than anything he's ever done. Second, he was going to be working on something bigger by the end of this year. I'm guessing this is the former.

This sounds great!

I had no idea he was working on a new flick. I suppose that everyone expected to have to wait another decade for Korine's next film, but not so!

Cannot wait.

It's funny how he is consciously going full circle to try and "make more people angry." What felt like something that naturally spewed forth from him before has now become something he is intentionally trying to produce in order to show he is still the same filmmaker he once was. "Now I'm going to make a film like Gummo again so they can see I haven't really lost my edge." Doesn't anyone else feel this way? What's also humorous is that the initial comparisons of Giuseppe Andrews to Korine has now clearly turned around to become Korine trying to be Andrews.

I just spoke with someone at the TIFF and she confirmed that Trash Humpers is indeed a feature and not a short film. It’s official running time is 78-minutes.

...hm, after the last one turned out to be a financial disaster, he had to put out his guns again.

actually, he said that it would make more people angry, not that he was trying to make people angry. I'll not weigh in until I know a little more than a one sentence description and an indirect quote.

That's a wise move and reading back over what I wrote it does seem I was too fierce. You have to admit though that from what we've seen with Crutchnap and recent published interviews with him, he definitely got a boner from YouTube videos and the synopsis and still from Trash Humpers is very Andrewsian. I definitely want to see what he's made of it but I'm positioning myself in the direct recharge camp of trepidation at this point.

KR: Are you working on a new film?

HK: Well I’m almost finished writing a movie. It’s funny, I got to the end as soon as the baby was born, just as the baby was born. So I’ve just got to now maybe do a little re-write and that’s it.

KR: Can you tell us anything about it?

HK: Man, this one I think is going to be like my breakthrough. This one is going to be the equivalent of like swallowing an entire line in a single swallow. You know it’s going to have that kind of effect on the audience - it will be like snorting an ice-cube.

KR: Snorting an ice-cube.

HK: Yeah well at least in my mind that’s what I was going for.

KR: Is it going to be shot in the States?

HK: Yeah, this one is going to take place in the United States, it’s going to take place in the bowels of the United States. Like basically it could even star a carport. You know what I mean? Like a carport or a parking garage. It could the be the first movie where the parking garage has a co-credit.
