I'm not trying to gain followers, just stating an opinion. Several pages back one of the members here remarked after seeing Mister Lonely that he 'couldn't believe that this film was directed and written by the guy who penned the line 'why can't you ball like Michael Jordan can?'' That's my sentiment exactly.

I've admitted this like three times now dude. I have no 'proof' that my opinion of her is indefinitely correct; as I said, it's just the impression that I get. As social creatures it is inevitable that we will form judgements of others, often the result of very subtle factors such as body language, communication style, etc. A few pages back I mentioned how little is known about her. She just strikes me as an extremely boring and unexceptional person, especially to be paired with someone like Harmony who once was what I would consider a truly unique intellect, a genuine rarity. I mean, shit, why doesn't she do an interview or something? I would be genuinely interested in some insight into her background, interests, etc. She is married to Harmony fucking Korine for Christ's sake. I'm guessing that you or someone else is going to respond with something along the lines of 'oh, she doesn't want to be in the spotlight' and maybe you're right but whatever. I've explained myself to the point of absolute redundancy at this point.

Yes, you have. I can understand your other points about the film - I think valid arguments can be made there - but this business about Rachel Korine, when you admit you don't know anything other than this image you've invented from impressions, is just pointedly nonsensical.

I think enough of it for now anyway. We seem to just be going around in circles with any further talk about it. Any other posts about this - unless it is something more than name-calling or a repetition of what has already been said - will be deleted.

Mister Lonely was a bit of a let down for me. I thought a lot of the humor in it was rather awkward and it bugged me. "YOU CAN LIVE FOREVER," Herzog talking to the man about his wife and Abraham Lincoln cussing are some that come to mind. Herzog seemed to be an over the top parody of himself, especially yelling at the nuns in the plane. I liked many of the visuals in the film, especially the nuns, but overall I was disinterested in the content. My favorite scene was when John Jacob Niles was playing.

The sequence in the nursing home was just atrocious.

Heh, I actually liked the nursing home scene. I didn't like Abraham Lincoln swearing though, either, that just seemed to me like an attempt to get a very cheap, dumb laugh. Besides that, when Marilyn is asked when she first started impersonating and she says, "When I got my boobs," that's always kind of made me cringe (I've heard it often through the trailer): it strikes me as the sort of joke that would fit in a Julia Roberts comedy. There are some other things I disliked that I mentioned further back in this thread.

I like it in all though, still. I watched it again a few days ago on DVD.

i read somewhere here, the UK DVD of Mister Lonely is being pushed back till may of 2009.

How does a july 28, 2008 release get push back that far? Even if Tartan close there doors...i don't get it. Can someone make sense of this? am i missing something. i've been anticipating this film for a long time now, still waiting patiently, even though im a little frustrated at this point(also, no response on a cinema obsura invite, so still waiting).

I too noticed that. What a bag of wank. I was actually intending on buying the dvd... and for me buying a dvd as soon as it comes out is a rarity, being the cheapskate I am.

can't help you out with a CO invite, sorry not on it, but yeah, that release date is really frustrating. my guess is that it's probably not definite, that Tartan's affairs are up in the air, and whoever's taking over their catalogue has sent out a provisional release schedule to stop them receiving a slew of enquiries while they're getting sorted out. it might move forward. then again, it might be a bad indication that whoever has taken over the catalogue doesn't place a high priority on releases like Mister Lonely and maybe just wants to milk the last life out of Tartan for their short term profitable Asia Extreme catalogue, which is a major factor in what did them in in the first place.

i'm getting a little tired of the total lack of priorities in the UK DVD market as far as the kinds of films i want to see go. we still don't have any release of Gummo since the VHS (i was hoping Mister Lonely might kickstart some interest in releasing that but apparently not), nor the Twin Peaks Season 2 boxed set, or gold boxed set, which are available all over the world and Europe, nor the Herzog documentaries. Our INLAND EMPIRE disc was a piece of shit compared to the rest of the world in terms of extras - no Lynch doc, no deleted scenes. that's four off the top of my head, but it's a regular frustration, the list is long. this has to in some way reflect the demand, because if demand existed, these things would undoubtedly have materialised, which is really sad.

i just watched this again. there are definitely some amazing moments in this film. i really like it a lot. it's definitely a harmony korine film, and it's got a lot in common with gummo and julien, it's just a bit more extravagant and maybe a lot more self-referential, maybe even more self involved, the way that Michael is vaguely based on Korine. I like that though, it's a more personal film.

for the record, without wishing to add to any played out arguments, i think Rachel Korine has a lot of potential. she stands out in a lot of the scenes she's in, especially the crying in the workshop one. i really liked the first night performance. the sun and the eggs and those Michael Jackson song titles scrolling across the screen were annoying. whoever said earlier that the eggs and sun were like the emoting pieces of coal in The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things was bang on in my opinion. it seems out of place. i really like the Herzog speech/nun's flying/marilyn in the forest/Silver Mount Zion sequence. there's definitely a lot i really like about it.

I like the scrolling song titles - I like scrolling titles in general (I really do); the great opening sequences in the Cremaster films come to mind - but yes, they don't really add any meaning for me. In the screenplay, if you haven't read that, it appears (I've only skimmed through it) they originally had those titles to indicate the seasons, so it'd say WINTER instead of MAN IN THE MIRROR. By the end of the film it would've gone through all seasons of the year.
