It comes in threes, Lemmy, Bowie and Alan Rickman, all 69-70, British, died of cancer.

Andrzej Zulawski

“To please the majority is the requirement of the Planet Cinema. As far as I’m concerned, I don’t make a concession to viewers, these victims of life, who think that a film is made only for their enjoyment, and who know nothing about their own existence.”

Paul Cox
Michael Cimino
Abbas Kiarostami

Really sad to lose these guys, especially Kiarostami whose recent films were stronger than ever.

Huge Michael Cimino fan. LOVE his first 4 films (Thunderbolt & Lightfoot, The Deer Hunter, Heaven's Gate and Year of the Dragon) The Sicilian is an alright film. But The Sicilian was to Michael Cimino what The Cotton Club was to Coppola, 2 big ambitious films that don't quite measure up to their earlier big ambitious films. 2 directors that were beaten down and worn out by the time they made them. Sunchaser is another film thats just alright, but nowhere near his first 4 films. Desperate Hours on the other hand is a piece of shit. I always hoped he would get another crack at making an original project. Heaven's Gate in my estimation is the most unfairly maligned film ever made. Its a great film if you ask me and one of the best films about America ever made. Maybe some critics genuinely disliked it. But I truly believe most critics had their review written before they actually saw the film. What was reviewed was the tabloid coverage of a troubled production. What was reviewed was a film that expressed what was perceived as anti American sentiment. Unfortunately I think the monumental failure of the movie broke him in a way that he never really recovered from. (I also really believe he may have been a closeted transgender woman.) I just sincerely hope he made peace with himself, his life and his career before he passed and didn't carry that burden with him to the grave. Anyways. RIP Michael Cimino.
