The Revenant was pretty good. Amazing photography, staging, choreography, imagery and acting. The script was pretty simple though. In less capable hands it would have been a run of the mill revenge movie.

I thought The Hateful 8 was excellent.

I didn't like Charlie Kaufman's new flick at all.

Loved it too. 70mm roadshow screening was a thrill. The closeup of the statue of Christ's crucifixion in the snow slowly pulling back to reveal the stagecoach is the shot of the year. Morricone's foreboding score has stayed with me for days.

Knight of Cups and Entertainment are both masterpieces.

I also liked Carol and Joy.

its tough to put my finger on why. The way Kaufman portrays the emptiness he feels in life and the constant feeling of self loathing that permeates the entire film is just really tedious. The film is very depressing, but at the same time, the film is in no way rewarding. I can watch truly depressing films and get something meaningful out of them. But not this. The characters to me are so empty and banal and non existent. Their entire existence and the entire world Kaufman created is like a strong vote for nihilism. Maybe its because I fear ending up like this movie. I don't know. I don't know how to express myself properly, but by the time I wake up tomorrow I'll probably never think of this film again. I know I saw it, but I'm not entirely convinced the film actually exists. It's mundane to a fault. There are just no signs of life.

Werner Herzog is my favorite filmmaker and I've seen all of his films. Queen of the Desert is the first film of his that I can unfortunately say was bad.

I loved it. There's a great Romantic tone and poetry of the desert, and Bell becomes another classic conquistador of the useless.

It's about as poetic as a Nicholas Sparks' novel. The cinematography is wonderful, and Nicole Kidman does well as Gerturde Bell, someone who deserves a better biopic than Queen of the Desert and it kills me to say that. I was astonished by how cliche and sloppy it was.

I liked the Julien Donkey Boy reference though.
