RICHARD STRANGE: TWICE REMOVED
Chris Lusher / Publication Unknown / October 2006
The following is a brief interview I conducted with Richard Strange concerning Mister Lonely.
Chris Lusher: So how was it playing honest Abe and how do you think Mister Lonely is going to turn out? It seems like a departure for Harmony and not as in less odd but odd in a more adult way perhaps?
Richard Strange: I have been a fan of Hamony's for years, so it was a thrill to be asked to play the part. The thing about 'Mister Lonely' is that we are NOT the characters we play, we are actors, playing IMPERSONATORS, playing those characters- a double removal! A French Charlie Chaplin, a Mexican Michael Jackson, an English Abe and Marilyn, all add to the strange mix that is Mister Lonely. It is without doubt HKs most beautiful and complex film to date, but will be strangely accessible to those for whom Gummo and julien were too "out there". But don't worry- it IS odd! Editing now, should be out early next year.
Lusher: How did you come to be involved with Mister Lonely and how would you describe Korines methods while shooting?
Strange: Been a huge fan of Harm's ever since Kids. Met him at a London party, we hit it off. I was about to fly to LA to do Robert Wilson's The Black Rider when HK called to say he wanted me to play Abe in a forthcoming movie. I was thrilled of course. I would describe HKs method thus: He is the perfect hostess at a cocktail party. Everybody knows everyone, everybody has a drink, he says "I am just nipping out" Then tosses a Mace grenade into the party and shouts "Action!!"
